The design challenge for this project was to explore the everyday sense of shared sonic experiences. Based on this we were to to generate sound related experiences, while taking into account the rich and textured relationships between the senses, and between individual and group behavior.

The theme for this project was the concept of Parasitic. We understood parasitic as something that feeds off another, but can, at the same time have a mutualistic and co-dependant relation. Furthermore, the design was aimed for a café or a co-working space. We chose to work with Café Jesusbaren in Malmö.

research

For this project, it was adamant to get properly acquainted with the space. The research stage consisted of contextual inquiry methods, specifically that of observation, interviews, and mappings to get a better sense of the café’s background, the way people interact with each other and with the space, and finally the role sound plays in this space. We interviewed the owner of the café, staff members and visitors. We furthermore did mappings of the café, focusing on the sound sources and the daily sound curve. Finally, through observation we could see the customer flow, and the different behaviours they would have in this space.

synthesise

Using the information gathered from our research, we framed our project based on two factors: the intricate decoration and the cultural gap. We then aimed to answer the following question: by using objects and sound, how can we use the atmosphere at Jesusbaren to connect cultures?

framing

Seeking Sound is an interactive audio and visual experience with virtually augmented objects. In order to share the intricacies of Latin-American culture as portrayed at Jesusbaren, our design consists of a magnifying glass where the visitor can place their mobile device and scan a number of QR codes placed next to images or objects. The visitor will see an AR figure related to the original object, accompanied by a unique sound pattern that changes according to the position and movement of the device. The sounds are to be related to that specific object.

ideation

Once our framing was clear, we went on to prototyping our magnifying class, and testing it with participants in the café.
